When setting out to create the Arena portraits, I set out to create portraits inspired by water. In thinking how to approach this, it was important to me not to work with obvious water images. Drawn by the idea that water symbolizes the unconscious in mythology, I was interested in the multifaceted, complex nature of this element; in its clarity and vitality as contrasted by its evasiveness and vastness. The thought of this complexity led to the idea of the photographic collage: an image layer.
